The historical development of social media.
20th century brought us the internet.
Designed principally for financial gain and was profit orientated.
Social networking was born in 1971, when the first email was sent. The two computers were sat right next to each other. The message said "QWERTYUIOP"
The first social networking site was created in 1994, 'Geocities'. Few years later AOL instant messenger and Six Degrees launched in 1997. Although it wasn't successful initially it was sold in 2001 for $125 million but completely shut down a year after.
How social media has evolved.
A new millennium brought a new era in social networking.
Facebook was launched in 2004 and was made to connect to US college students, then opened to the public two years later. Facebook surpassed Myspace and Friendster with 150 million members around the globe.
The amount of people that are using the social media platform Facebook today is so vast that 24% of the world population use Facebook monthly. Snapchat and Instagram are other social media platforms. Instagram has 700 Millions monthly users whereas Snapchat has 166 million daily users. Instagram is trying to overcome Snapchat with the stories as Instagram has 200 million more daily.
From 1971 social media has evolved dramatically from text to images. More of the younger market within social media will be affected with this by the use of Snapchat, Instagram etc. For example with the use of Snapchat is affecting lots of young people as there parents can monitor them while on this app as the pictures disappear straight after its opened.
