The uses made of social media by individuals
and groups
With 2 billion of people which use at least one social media, individuals and groups find different ways to manage their favourite social media. Starting by individuals and according age, each internet user uses mainly a typology of social media. For example for oldest internet users (+ 65 years old) the most use of social media is Facebook to keep in touch with family, friends and communicate with other people.
This part of
population is mainly interested to have news from their children or
grandchildren and do not change their habits contrary to young people which are
very volatile and can change very quickly from one social media to another. For 49% of people between 18 and 24 years old
the most popular is Snapchat. Snapchat it is an exchange of picture or video
during a limited time. It is a quick exchange of information by pictures.
The first use of social media is to communicate
and stay in touch with friends/ family especially via Facebook.
By asking to several social media users via
Facebook and by regarding some blogs for understanding views of others people, Facebook
is principally used with friends, Instagram to follow trends or artists, Snapchat
is used to joke and for filters. Linkedin is different because it is used
principally for professional networks.
By others
ways individuals use social media to find a job, to promote an event, to access
to information and to buy stuffs.
Social Media for Groups
Social Media is used by groups to manage events. It is a way to share some educational programs to match with the new generation of young people.
Groups,
like associations use Social Media to have a visibility to catch interest of
people and find more volunteer or more money. This is a free labour for groups or association to promote their group. One post about Social Capital speak about this, you can read that here : Social Capital post. This free labour from internet users (Social Production) is a new way for groups to have this labour for nothing.
Social Medias
become a way to find a solution of share, for example to manage car sharing or
exchanges stuffs or to find a free place to sleep, like couchsurfing.

You have provided a lot of good information here! I like how you have added in that older people use social media to keep in contact with their kids and grandkids, it is what I agree a lot of older people only have social media for. Adding in chart statistics was a good way to make it clear why people use social media.
ReplyDeleteI was quite surprised by the first infographic statistics on your blog for Facebook. It seems quite even percentages for all the ages. I would have expected to see younger ages at much higher percentages. I like how you showed all the different types of social media, even the fact that LinkedIn is used for professional networking as I was unsure of this platform. Very informative. (PS. the links are in French lol)
ReplyDeleteThanks Sharon ! Indeed links are in French ;) I read in French and in English and these french links look me accurate ... but it is possible to automatically translate in English with Google. ;) A lot information are in both language.. it is very interesting to have both ;)
DeleteAaah I didn't realise you can change it to English on Google. Every day is a learning day Christelle :) Good blog, well done.
DeleteGreat explanation of different forms of social media and categorising it within age groups as to what they mainly use it for. I feel i learned a lot through reading your blog. Great use of info graphics. Just a little criticism i felt for a blog it was a bit lengthy and i lost a bit of interest about half way through, maybe try to summarise a bit more. Overall a good blog well done.
ReplyDeleteThank Joe-Lee ! and you're right. By reading again my post it's true it looks lengthy.. I summarised some parts to be clearer for readers ;) thanks for your comments.
