Finding improvements to increase personal privacy on social media is always a good thing to look into to make you feel safer.

As a frequent user of social media accounts, it is always reassuring to find new ways to feel safer online and settling to know that you are limiting yourself from the worst case scenario of cyber bullying or getting in trouble with future/current employers but also that you're simply just being safe in general as you are able to limit who can see what on your accounts.
A good straight to the point safety improvement would be for everyone to keep their Twitter accounts on private rather than public, by doing this it can limit arguments on the site when people tweet something possibly others don't agree with. If schools mentioned more about why you should have your accounts on private, why you should not have auto log in on your devices for example. If schools provided more information like this then it could potentially help in case the safety online of teens and limit the risks of online bulling.
I struggled to find a lot of articles or websites on this particular topic and i think this is because social media accounts such as Facebook, update their privacy settings without any warning or discussion with the public. A fellow blog mentioned that social media should provide a unique pin for security reasons to back up your personal data such as emails, phone number etc which can help insure no one can access your data and your account if safer from being hacked or lost in worse case scenario. I think that there should be a lot more online information of ways you can improve personal privacy on social media as it can help increase the safety of everyone online and help limit signs of abuse online.
I think that if social media sites were more open when they're changing their safety and privacy then it can help make users more aware of ways they can improve their safety. The whole cyber attack recently on the the NHS getting their files hacked for example with their computers being hacked should in my opinion help make everyone more cautious of what they post online and should push sites to increase their privacy settings for their users personal information.
The main question to ask is; - Do you feel you could want more information on how to be safer online?

I agree Lauren this is a major concern, having a son that is now 12 I worry about this daily. Although I don't allow social media at this stage he has tried to open accounts in the past without my knowledge or consent. Along with better privacy settings I think their should be more of and identification process when opening new accounts for example passport checks as this would stop children that are too young to have social media being able to fake their age.
ReplyDeleteI can imagine how much of a worry it must be for you having a young son who can create an account so easily online. I think your suggestion of providing ID before being allowed to create an account would be a great idea as it would prevent so much safety and concern issues!
DeleteNo I didn't come across very much in the way of the social media platforms improving settings to increase safety either. It looks like the onus is very much on us on this one to check our settings and make sure we are following the correct procedures and to educate young people on this too. Plenty articles/videos on how to manage your internet privacy settings. Little unsure of how these platforms can actually adapt an identification process with the sheer amount of social media users these days..?
ReplyDeleteIt's rather concerning that they aren't doing more to find ways of increasing the safety measures online, I agree with you saying we should be teaching the younger ones how to go by the correct safety procedures. I think it will always be a major concern for everyone that it is hard to update the privacy completely, thank you for your feedback sharon!
