How can individuals protect their privacy?

Have you ever sat and wondered, who knows what about you on social media?

A large concern which a lot of people wonder is what others know about them online due to the lack of secure privacy settings or even through their own lack of exploring the settings section of their accounts to adjust their security to suit their preferences.

Many forget that potential employers will search their candidates on Facebook or Twitter for example to try get a further understanding of who they may employ

When you post information on your social media, the vast majority of times that data is collected for social advertisers and third parties to adjust their ads and games etc. Facebook provides a option on privacy settings where you can change your posts views to public/friends/friends of friends/my eyes only.  The main privacy protection you can have is to be cautious of only accepting people you know to be your friend online and to limit what personal data you share online to others. When using social media users should be made aware of their GPS being on which can provide users access to your current location and to change your password regularly just in case someone knows your login details.

In my personal opinion i think that it is wrong that companies use what you post as data but their argument would then be that they are providing a free service so it is only fair that they use your data for their own business' gain and that it is a growing concern that people are not guaranteed the best level of privacy regardless to what your settings are.

Before posting online, think about what the legal and moral consequences of that post could be.

  1. I agree Lauren, when doing my research I found that photos contain information such as where the photo was taken which can be very dangerous even if privacy settings are in place. I don't really like the fact that my data is mined while using social media but agree with the fact that we kind of have to accept it if we want to use the free service. Good Blog well done!

    1. It's scary how much access people can have to finding out things about you due to things tiny post simply having that location added on which not many people realise until it is posted. I have the same views as you, I don't like the idea that they have so much access to our data just so we don't have to pay to use their service. Thank you, I appreciate your feedback.

  2. I'm in agreement with you too Lauren. Its not fair that companies can use your data and get away with it just because it is a free service. I'm going to show this blog to my son and go through the link you provided with him. I definitely think young people are unaware of how important privacy settings are and what they post reveals about themselves. Very informative! (especially for a worried mum).

  3. Well done Lauren for this blog ! A lot people don't care about their privacy. I try to raise awareness among my daughter about this but she told me there is no problem because she doesn't anything to hide... I think for young people it is very complicated to understand all implication in their future life...

  4. I agree with you 100% I feel that its unethical but you need to agree to use the free service they are offering. I always have my privacy settings on private just to be on the safe side, a lot of my friends and people I know have their accounts on public and they always get with with spam. I really liked the post and felt that I learned a fair bit from this, the link was also very useful to me.
